 Featuring Paul-Henri Bourguignon’s Expressionist Paintings

The final days of October inspire thoughts of all things creepy and frightful and, at the same time, enchanting and endearing. In the spirit of Halloween, Eisele Gallery presents both the dark and whimsical sides of Paul-Henri Bourguignon in a special show, opening at Eisele Gallery, 6936 Madisonville Road, Friday, October 22, from 5-8pm p.m.

Bourguignon is well known for exploring modernist movements in his paintings and drawings. As the art critic for the Brussels newspaper Le Phare in the early 20th century, he interviewed artists working in these European movements.

Bourguignon landscapes and portraits are well known for reaching deep into Cubism, Fauvism, and Minimalism. Less well known but equally compelling are his paintings with roots in German Expressionism as he employed expressive color and line to explore emotion. Vincent van Gogh, Edvard Munch, and James Ensor proved particularly influential to the Expressionists, encouraging the distortion of form, exaggerated brushstrokes, and strong colors to convey anxieties and yearnings in this historical avant-garde movement that inspired modernists for decades.

The works in this unusual exhibition are sometimes ominous and sometimes humorous in true trick or treat fashion. Regardless of what they depict, they demand consideration, appealing to the farthest reaches of our psyche.

Jane Hoffelt, trustee of the Bourguignon estate, will be present at the reception to discuss and answer questions about these mysterious and beautiful paintings and, on Saturday, October 22 at 11 a.m., she will give a special Eisele Gallery Light Brunch & Talk that will provide insight into the world of expressionism—an important movement that changed the art world forever.
